FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A substance used to extinguish fires accidentally leaked into the World Trade Center PATH Station Thursday morning, injuring several people, transit officials said.
Four workers suffered minor injuries when the substance, commonly used a fire suppressant, was released from an automatic extinguisher inside a signal station near the tracks, a Port Authority spokesman said.
Smoke from welding work taking place near the signal room set off the automatic extinguisher around 10:30 a.m., sending workers in the room running, spokesman Steve Coleman explained.
He said the injuries might have been caused by the workers scarmbling to get out of the room.
All the injured parties were transported to New York Downtown Hospital for evaluation, the FDNY said.
