Fire Prevention Week 2014

Take Action to Prevent Fires: Protect your Family! Oct. 5-11 is National Fire Prevention Week. In 2010, there were 3,100 unintentional deaths related to fire, smoke and flames, according to the Council's Injury Facts, 2012 Edition. The risk of fire increases as we head into the cooler months. The National Safety Council asks each of us to take a few moments to prevent fires in our homes. Make your family safer by completing a home fire safety checklist and identifying fire risks in your home. Steps to prevent fires: Have properly working smoke alarms Have chimney's cleaned and inspected yearly. Be extremely careful when using space heaters. Never leave candles unattended. Don't leave your dryer running when you leave the house or go to bed for the night. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and change the batteries at least once a year Place smoke alarms on each floor of your home and in each bedroom Plan a family escape route and practice it once a month Install a home sprinkler system if three or more stories Place fire extinguishers throughout your home and make sure everyone in the house knows how to use them Check your Home Heating and Air conditioning units for proper functionality. Monitor extension cord use, and make sure heating and cooling units are not plugged into there. HAZCOM Standard adoption...FSSA Town Hall

At the February 2014 Installers Division Meeting during the Town Hall the topic of HAZCOM Standard adoption by OSHA was discussed.  FSSA would like to provide you with the following preliminary information that may be useful to you since it is time sensitive.  FSSA will continue to provide more information regarding this topic in the coming months. 
There are new hazardous shipping standards that OSHA is adopting to align their HAZCOM standard with the UN Global Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Standards.  These standard update new labeling elements, as well as a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) .  By December 1, 2013, employers are expected to have completed training their workers on the new label elements and safety data sheet format required under the revised Hazard Communication standard (HCS).
