FSSA HAS NAMED NEW VICE CHAIR OF MANUFACTURERS DIVISION The recently vacated Vice Chair of the Manufacturers Division  has been filled.  A vote was conducted by the principle Manufacturers and the results are in. The FSSA would like to congratulate and welcome Kevin Murray of Siemens Industry to the Board of Directors.

PASSING OF CHARLES WILLMS Charles Fredrick Willms, 84, passed away September 14, 2013. Born in Hudson County, NJ, on June 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Sadie and Fredrick Willms. An award winning rifleman, Charles served in the US National Guard, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant. Charles attended NJ Institute of Technology where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. A registered professional engineer, he was a member of the Tau Beta Phi National Engineering Honor Society, Phi Tau Sigma, ASME, CGA, IAC, US TAG, and served as technical director of the FSSA, and chairman of the NFPA. Charles worked as Director of Engineering for Fire Protections Systems for Walter Kidde, in NC, and was then self-employed as a Product Liability Consultant for fire protection products. He enjoyed playing the drums and spending time with his family. Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Maryann E. Willms. He is survived by his loving daughter, Beverly, of Raleigh, NC; son, Roger, and his wife, Melinda, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Dean and Madolyn, of Charlotte; brother, Fred Willms, of NJ; and several nieces and nephews.

SUPDET presenters discuss Halon alternatives for U.S. Air Force

Presenters at today's Suppression, Detection and Signaling Research and Applications Conference (SUPDET) In Orlando highlighted how the U.S. Air Force has developed replacements for the fire suppression agent Halon 1301 to protect "hush houses," or jet engine noise suppressor systems.

The need to find an equivalency to Halon 1301 appears to be an environmental one--the agent is classified as an ozone-depleting substance. (The European Union discontinued use of Halon for noncritical applications in 2003.) SUPDET speakers Juan Font with the U.S. Air Force and William Meyring of 3M also outlined the steps taken to phase out the cleaning agent and develop alternative system solutions for the Air Force's critical facility. 2011 Annual Forum Art Auction Raises $5,700

For the FSSA Education Foundation



At this year's Annual Forum, keynote speaker and artist, Erik Wahl, presented "The Art of Vision", a one-of-a-kind program designed to challenge organizations to discover their untapped potential and embrace the future by becoming more innovative, more productive and ultimately more profitable. The format was fast-paced, entertaining, and full of surprises. As a metaphor to the fabric of his message of creating a vision, Wahl effortlessly crafted three over-sized paintings of Michael Jordan, the Statue of Liberty, and Einstein (this one he painted upside down). Erik Burkland was the lucky winner of the Michael Jordan painting.

The next day, Board Member Steve Carter made a technical presentation on the NFPA 72 Update. Everyone was full of laughter as Carter started off the session drawing a stick figure on a flip chart in reference to Wahl. The following evening at the President's banquet, the paintings and Carter's drawing were auctioned off the raise money for the FSSA Education Foundation. The following contributors were the winners of the Art Auction:

• Pam Boyer - BFPE International: $2,200 for the Einstein painting, which she kindly gifted to George Keeley, FSSA Legal Counsel

• Roger Bourgeois - Bourgeois & Associates: $2,000 for the Statue of Liberty

Overall, the Art Auction was a huge success raising a total of $5,700 for the FSSA Education Foundation.
